Yes, you heard that right. I straight up failed…and for the first time, I’m admitting it!
I was in the 6th grade and for some reason, the subject of English became something I just could not comprehend. Actually, it was only one aspect of English because up to that point, I had breezed through my coursework for years. There was something regarding nouns of direct address, past participles, present participles, combined with identifying all parts of a noun, the indirect object, etc…that I never could understand at the time and I flat-out failed the whole year. As a matter-of-fact, the following year when I did pass (although with less than stellar grades), I continued to struggle with this concept.
Fast forward over 20 years later and I am now a college graduate from Mississippi State University where I had many appearances on the Dean’s List and the President’s List. Yes, that coursework included multiple English courses AND I was even brave enough to roll through French I, II and III.
You see, I refused to be defined by one part of my life that did not go as planned. The past struggle was real…but it did not and does not define my present success. I was given a second chance to rectify those mistakes and although it took a little while, a little maturity and a lot of focus, I was able to break through and achieve victory on the other side.
I am so happy to start off next year with a series called “God of 2nd Chances” because at Thrive Church, we are people of a second chance. We are constantly amazed at how God uses broken people to achieve the will of the Father and we celebrate that our failures are not final…the breakdown could be the set-up of a bigger breakthrough.
If you still have breath in your body, God is not done with you just yet. Believe that Jesus loves you so much that His plan is way bigger than our past and the best is yet to come!
